7-Day Kilimanjaro Machame Route Climb with Expert Guides

Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania 7 Days 4.5 (213 reviews)

About This Package

Conquer Africa’s highest peak via the legendary 7-Day Machame Route, affectionally known as the "Whiskey Route." Renowned for its breathtaking scenery, diverse landscapes, and high summit success rate, this 7-day itinerary gives your body extra time to adapt using the vital "climb high, sleep low" strategy. Traverse rainforests, alpine deserts, and dramatic lava walls on your way to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800m to 2,835m | Distance: 11 km | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Highlights: After registration at Machame Gate, begin your trek through the dense, enchanted rainforest. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys and exotic flora. Arrive at Machame Camp nestled at the edge of the forest canopy.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 2,835m to 3,850m | Distance: 5 km | Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

Highlights: Leave the rainforest behind and climb steep ridges across open moorland. Cross the expansive Shira Plateau and enjoy stunning views of the Western Breach and Kibo Glaciers as you settle into Shira 2 Camp.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,850m to 4,600m (Lava Tower) to 3,900m (Barranco) | Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

Highlights: A crucial day for acclimatization! Trek up to the towering volcanic mass of Lava Tower for lunch before descending into the magnificent Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant senecios.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,900m to 3,960m | Distance: 5 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Highlights: Tackle the famous Barranco Wall—a thrilling, non-technical scramble that rewards you with sweeping views over the valley. Continue through rolling alpine desert hills to Karanga Camp for an overnight rest.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (Summit Base)

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,670m | Distance: 4 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Highlights: Ascend through a desolate, otherworldly alpine desert landscape until you reach Barafu Camp. Enjoy early dinner, prep your gear, and rest before your midnight trek to the summit.

Elevation: 4,670m to 5,895m (Summit) down to 3,100m | Distance: 16 km total | Hiking Time: 11–15 hours

Highlights: Begin your night ascent by headlamp up steep scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,756m). Watch the sunrise over Africa as you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After brief celebrations, descend back to Barafu for lunch and further down to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (Moshi/Arusha)

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m | Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
