Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m | Distance: 8 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Highlights: After completing park formalities at Marangu Gate, walk along well-paved trails winding through a lush tropical rainforest. Spot vibrant bird species and playful colobus monkeys. Reach Mandara Hut in the afternoon and enjoy a short walk to the nearby Maundi Crater for early views of Kenya's plains.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m | Distance: 12 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Highlights: Transition out of the rainforest into giant heather and open moorland. As you trek across rolling ridges, enjoy grand, sweeping vistas of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Arrive at the sprawling Horombo Hut village for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (Zebra Rocks)
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,020m (Zebra Rocks) & back | Distance: 5 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Highlights: Spend an extra crucial day adapting your body to the thinning altitude. Take a gentle hike to the iconic black-and-white striped Zebra Rocks, enjoy lunch, and return to Horombo Hut for rest and hydration.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (Summit Base)
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m | Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Highlights: Cross the dry, stark alpine desert of the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Prepare mentally and physically as you approach Kibo Hut, your base camp before the final night ascent. Rest early after a warm dinner.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (Summit Day!) to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Summit) down to 3,720m | Distance: 21 km total | Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Highlights: Wake up around midnight for the ultimate summit push! Climb up scree trails by headlamp to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim as dawn breaks, then continue along the snowy rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate on top of Africa before descending back to Kibo Hut for lunch and further down to Horombo Hut for sleep.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (Moshi/Arusha)
Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m | Distance: 20 km | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Highlights: Enjoy your final descent down through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Celebrate with your mountain team, receive your official Kilimanjaro certificate (gold for Uhuru Peak!), and transfer back to your hotel for a long hot shower.
