Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

Elevation: 1,800m to 2,850m | Distance: 11 km | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Highlights: Register at Umbwe Gate and dive straight into a steep, continuous climb along a narrow ridge between two deep river valleys. Trek through dense moss-draped rainforest until you reach Umbwe Cave Camp.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 2,850m to 3,900m | Distance: 6 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (Summit Base)

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,670m | Distance: 4 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Highlights: Ascend through stark, otherworldly mountain landscapes to reach Barafu Camp. Settle in early, enjoy a high-carbohydrate dinner, and rest before your midnight trek to the top.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (Summit Day!) to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,670m to 5,895m (Summit) down to 3,100m | Distance: 16 km total | Hiking Time: 11–15 hours

Highlights: Begin your night ascent by headlamp up steep scree slopes toward Stella Point. Watch the spectacular sunrise over Africa as you stand on Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend to Barafu for a brief rest and continue down to Mweka Camp.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (Moshi/Arusha)
