The term "Big Five" was coined by colonial big-game hunters to describe the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot. Today, they're the five most sought-after animals to photograph on safari.
Lion
Best spot: Serengeti (Seronera valley) and Ngorongoro Crater. The Serengeti has an estimated 3,000 lions — the densest population in Africa.
Leopard
Best spot: Serengeti kopjes (rocky outcrops) and sausage trees along the Seronera River. Dawn and dusk drives offer the best chances.
Elephant
Best spot: Tarangire National Park has the highest elephant density in Tanzania — herds of 200+ are common during the dry season (June–October).
Buffalo
Best spot: Ngorongoro Crater floor. Large herds graze the open grasslands. Also common in Arusha National Park on Mount Meru treks.
Black Rhino
Best spot: Ngorongoro Crater is the only reliable place in Northern Tanzania to see them. About 26 individuals in the crater — binoculars essential.
