Climbing Kilimanjaro is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, but preparation makes the difference between a miserable slog and the experience of your life. Here are our top 10 tips:
1. Choose the Right Route
The Lemosho Route (7 days) offers the best balance of scenery, success rate, and crowd avoidance. The Marangu Route has huts but is steeper. Northern Circuit gives the highest success rate at 95%+.
2. Acclimatise Properly
More days on the mountain = better acclimatisation = higher summit success. We recommend at least 7 days. "Pole pole" (slowly, slowly) is the golden rule.
3. Physical Fitness
You don't need to be an athlete, but regular cardio for 2-3 months before your climb makes a huge difference. Focus on hiking, stair climbing, and endurance training.
4. Pack Layers
Temperatures range from +30°C at the gate to -20°C at the summit. Layer system: base layer, insulating mid-layer, waterproof outer shell.
5. Drink Plenty of Water
Aim for 3-4 litres per day to combat altitude effects. Our guides carry hydration packs.
